I was talking with a friend recently who felt stuck. Not the “I can’t find my keys” kind of stuck—more like the “I’m not sure where my life is going and I don’t love that answer” kind.
Naturally, I did what any good friend does. I nodded thoughtfully, offered a few encouraging words… and then spent the rest of the day thinking about it like it was my full-time job.
Somewhere between my workout and my second cup of coffee, it hit me: I didn’t just end up with a life I love. I’ve been quietly, stubbornly, sometimes awkwardly building it.
Not in one grand, movie-worthy moment.
But in small, consistent, occasionally ridiculous decisions.
One workout at a time.
One new challenge at a time.
One “this seems like a terrible idea, let’s do it anyway” adventure at a time.
And here’s the part that really landed for me—especially at this stage of life: I don’t have the luxury of just sitting back and seeing where things go.
That might have worked in my 20s. Maybe even my 40s.
But now? I’m not interested in being a passive participant in my own life, waiting to see what shows up like it’s a surprise subscription box.
I don’t want to be at the mercy of circumstances, or worse, playing victim to the hand I’ve been dealt.
Because let’s be honest—we’ve all been dealt some questionable cards. Some of mine looked like they came from a garage sale deck missing the queen of hearts and two aces.
But here’s the thing: you can still play your hand well.
And better yet—you can decide how you want to play the game.
For me, that’s meant choosing movement over stagnation.
Choosing challenge over comfort.
Choosing “why not?” over “why bother?”
It’s meant signing up for things that scare me just enough to make me question my sanity—but not enough to stop me. (Usually.)
It’s meant falling down—literally sometimes—and getting back up with a scraped knee and a slightly bruised ego, but a stronger sense of who I am.
Because the magic? It doesn’t happen when everything is predictable and safe and neatly planned.
The magic shows up when you step outside your comfort zone and realize…
you’re more capable than you gave yourself credit for.
That you can do hard things.
That you can reinvent yourself.
That you can still surprise yourself.
And maybe most importantly—that you’re not done yet.
Not even close.
So if you’re feeling stuck, or unsure, or like life is just kind of happening to you right now, here’s what I’d say:
Start small. But start.
Take the walk.
Sign up for the class.
Say yes to the thing that makes you a little nervous and a little excited.
You don’t have to overhaul your entire life by next Tuesday. (Honestly, that sounds exhausting.)
But you can make one decision today that moves you a fraction closer to the life you actually want.
And then tomorrow? Do it again.
Before you know it, you’ll look around and realize—
this life you’re living?
You built it.
And trust me… that feels a whole lot better than just ending up there.
