I had one of those moments the other day that makes you stop and go… wait, what just happened?
I went to put on a summer skirt—one I’ve owned for a while—and it practically fell off of me.
Now here’s the kicker:
The scale hasn’t changed. Not one bit.
I weigh the same today as I did a year ago.
If I had only been relying on that number, I would have told you absolutely nothing has changed.
But clearly… something has.
The Scale Is a Terrible Storyteller
For the longest time, I treated the scale like it was the ultimate authority.
Up a pound? Bad day.
Down a pound? Celebrate.
But the scale doesn’t tell you:
- If you’ve gained muscle
- If you’ve lost fat
- If your body composition has completely shifted
It just spits out a number and leaves you to emotionally deal with it.
And apparently, it can be wildly misleading.
The Skirt Doesn’t Lie
That skirt told me more in five seconds than the scale has told me in a year.
What changed?
- I’ve been lifting weights
- I’ve increased my protein
- I’ve been more intentional about my nutrition
So even though the number stayed the same, my body didn’t.
Less fat.
More muscle.
Different shape.
Same weight… completely different fit.
Thank Goodness for “Past Me”
During my initial weight loss journey, I did something that I’m now extremely grateful for:
Every three months, I took pictures.
Same spot.
Same lighting.
Same (not glamorous) undergarments.
At the time, I wasn’t sure it was doing much. Honestly, it felt a little tedious.
But now?
Those pictures are gold.
Because when the scale doesn’t move, those photos say,
“Actually… you’ve come a long way.”
What I’m Adding Now: Measurements
Clearly, I need a better system than just stepping on a scale and hoping for insight.
So I’m adding:
- Waist measurement
- Hips
- Thighs
- Maybe even arms (hello, strength training 💪)
Because inches don’t lie either.
And unlike the scale, they actually reflect changes in body composition.
The Bigger Lesson
If you’re only looking at the scale, you’re missing most of the story.
Progress can look like:
- Clothes fitting differently
- Feeling stronger
- More energy
- Better labs
- A body that simply moves better
None of those show up in a number on the bathroom floor.
My New Rule
The scale gets a vote.
It does not get the final say.
Because if a skirt is falling off of me and the scale says nothing has changed…
I’m going with the skirt.
Every time.
